KUŞKOR

The North Cyprus Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature (KUŞKOR), has been active since 1988, and strives to protect birds and their habitats in North Cyprus through education, research, monitoring and lobbying.

We work hard to protect and conserve the breeding and migrant bird populations of North Cyprus at a time when natural habitat is dwindling through human development and the numbers of birds are depleting due to hunting, poisoning, changes in land use and climate change.

The First record of Lesser Flamingo in Cyprus: Not A Surprise!

Although Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is a common winter visitor in Cyprus; its smaller relative, Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) had never been recorded in the island until May 8th 2015 at Kukla/Köprü/Kuklia Wetland, North Cyprus. Yet this occurrence is not a surprise if the species distribution is considered.

The Lesser Flamingo is the most abundant flamingo species in the world. However, due to its specialized diet of microscopic alkaline cyanobacteria (‘blue-green algae’), it is totally dependent on a habitat of shallow saline/alkaline lakes, pans, wetlands and coastal areas particularly during breeding season. While it is reported as regular species in 30 countries from West Africa, ...

Lothian Ringing Group Engages with KUŞKOR Ringing Scheme

The eastern Mediterranean has long been known as a crossroads for many species of migrants on their long-distance travels between northern breeding areas and wintering grounds in Africa and Asia.

One only has to look at its geographical location to see it's obvious potential. The mountains hold Bonelli's Eagle, while Pallid Harrier are regular. There are two endemic species; Cyprus Warbler and Cyprus Pied Wheatear, while species such as European Roller, Great Spotted Cuckoo and Shrikes pass through in big numbers. Locations, the joy of the unexpected [you never know what migration time would bring]. A great bunch of people made for a wonderful ringing holiday, all in all a terrific week was had by all.

Although Bird ringing has been taking place in association with KUŞKOR for many years, I have only recently become involved as of 2013. For the last 3 years one week in April has been blocked out of the calendar for helping out with ringing the endemic, breeding and passage birds that frequent North Cyprus.
